2. Connect the tachometer to the engine and start the engine.
3. Make sure the air conditioner is turned off.
4. After the engine has warmed up to normal operating temperature (the radiator fan will turn on), switch to position [2].
5. Press the brake and accelerator pedals all the way down for 6-8 seconds and record the engine speed. Do not shift the lever when the engine speed increases.
6. Allow the engine to cool for 2 minutes, then repeat the test in positions [D], [1] and [R].
Note:
- To avoid damage to the transmission, do not test the engine speed with the vehicle stationary for more than 10 seconds at a time.
- Testing the engine speed on a stationary vehicle is performed for diagnostic purposes only.
- The engine speed when the vehicle is stationary should be the same in positions [D], [2], [1] and [R].
- Do not perform tests on a stationary vehicle with automatic transmission pressure gauges connected.
Engine speed when the vehicle is stationary
| Standard | 2320 rpm |
| Limit | 2170-2470 rpm |
7. If the measurements do not match the values given, please refer to the table at the bottom of the page.
| Malfunction | Probable cause |
| High engine speed with vehicle stationary in positions [D], [2], [1] and [R]. | Low fluid level Low ATF pump performance ATF pump faulty The ATF mesh filter is clogged The RN control valve is stuck in the closed position |
| High engine speed with vehicle stationary in [R] position. | The 4th gear clutch is slipping. |
| High engine speed with vehicle stationary in position [2]. | The 2nd gear clutch is slipping. |
| High engine speed with vehicle stationary in position [1]. | The 1st gear clutch is slipping. |
| High engine speed with vehicle stationary in [R] position. | The 4th gear clutch is slipping. |
| Low engine speed with vehicle stationary in positions [D], [2], [1] and [R]. | Low engine power The engine throttle valve is closed The freewheel clutch of the torque converter is slipping |
