Checking the ignition timing angle
1. Start the engine. Maintain the engine speed at about 3000 rpm (min⁻¹) with no electrical load, with the selector lever in position P or N, until the radiator fan comes on, then let it idle.
2. Check the idle speed.
3. Short the SCS terminal (diagnostic connector) to ground using the DLC contact block (data transfer connector): Connect the DLC terminal block (A) to the 16-pin data link connector (DLC) (B), then short-circuit terminals No. 4 and 9 on the DLC terminal block using a short-circuit jumper (C) and press the switch.

4. Short the SCS terminal to ground using the Honda PGM Tester: Connect the Honda PGM Tester (A) to the 16-pin data connector (B).

5. Connect the strobe light to the current loop.

6. Aim the strobe light at the arrows (A) on the timing chain cover. Check the ignition timing without the el. loads, turning off the headlights, fan, rear window defroster and air conditioner.

| Automatic transmission: | 8°±2° before TDC (RED mark (B)) at idle speed in position [P] or [N] |
7. If the ignition timing is not within the specified range, replace the ECM/PCM.
8. Disconnect the Honda PGM Special Tool/Tester and timing light.
