Checking the transfer case



1. Raise the vehicle and support it securely.

2. Shift the gearbox to the [N] position.

3. Apply marks (A) to the propeller shaft (B) and the transfer case connecting flange (C).

4. Separate the propeller shaft from the transfer case assembly.

5. Install the indicator head (A) on the transfer case coupling flange (B) and measure the clearance in the transfer case gear engagement.

Standard: 0.06-0.1 in mm

6. If the clearance is different from the norm, remove the transfer case assembly and adjust the clearance in the transfer case gear.

7. Check for fluid leaks between the mating surfaces of the transfer case assembly and the transmission.

8. If there is a leak, remove the transfer case assembly and replace the O-ring. Also check for fluid leaks between the mating surfaces of the crankcase and the transfer case cover. If there is a leak, remove the transfer case cover and replace the O-ring.



9. Check for fluid leaks between the connecting flange and the transfer case seal.

10. If there is a leak, remove the transfer case assembly from the transmission and replace the oil seal and O-ring on the transfer case driven gear shaft. If the seal and O-ring need to be replaced, the transfer case gear contact patch shape, transfer case gear engagement clearance, tapered roller bearing starting torque, and total starting torque must be checked and adjusted. Do not replace the oil seal on the transfer case assembly installed on the transmission.
