Checking engine compression (Honda CR-V 2)

1. Warm up the engine to normal operating temperature (before turning on the cooling fan).

2. Turn the ignition key to the OFF position.

3. Remove the cover from the intake manifold.

4. Disconnect the connectors from all four injectors.

5. Start the engine and let it run until it stalls.

6. Remove the four ignition coils.

7. Remove the four spark plugs.

8. Screw the compression gauge into the spark plug hole.

9. Connect the tachometer.

10. Open the throttle valve fully, then crank the engine with the starter and measure the compression.

Compression pressure: More than 930 kPa (9.5 kgf/cm²), at 250 rpm (min⁻¹)

11. Measure the compression on the remaining cylinders.

Maximum difference: Within 200 kPa (2.0 kgf/cm²)

12. If the compression is abnormal, check the following and re-measure the compression.
  • Valves and seats are damaged or worn.
  • The cylinder head gasket is damaged.
  • Piston rings are damaged or worn.
  • Pistons and cylinder walls are damaged or worn.
