Gears on the drive shaft:

  • The 4th gear pinion is engaged and disengaged from the drive shaft by the 4th gear clutch.
  • The 3rd gear pinion is engaged and disengaged from the drive shaft by the 3rd gear clutch.
  • The reverse gear is engaged and disengaged from the drive shaft by the 4th gear clutch.
  • The intermediate gear sits on the splines of the drive shaft and rotates with it.

Gears on the intermediate shaft:

  • The main transmission pinion is made integral with the intermediate shaft.
  • The 1st, 2nd, 3rd gears and the parking gear sit on the splines of the intermediate shaft and rotate with it.
  • The 4th and reverse gears rotate independently of the intermediate shaft. The reverse gear selector lever engages the 4th and reverse gears into the reverse gear selector lever hub. The reverse gear selector hub sits on the splines of the intermediate shaft so that the 4th gear and reverse gear gears engage with the intermediate shaft.

Gears on the driven shaft:

  • The 1st gear pinion is engaged and disengaged from the driven shaft by the 1st gear clutch.
  • The 2nd gear gear is engaged and disengaged from the driven shaft by the 2nd gear clutch.
  • The intermediate gear sits on the splines of the driven shaft and rotates with it.

The idler gear on the idle shaft transmits power from the drive shaft to the driven shaft.

The reverse idler gear transmits power from the drive shaft reverse gear to the intermediate shaft reverse gear and reverses the direction of rotation of the intermediate shaft.

Position [P]

Hydraulic pressure is not supplied to the couplings. Power is not transmitted to the intermediate shaft. The intermediate shaft is locked by the parking brake pawl, which locks the parking gear.

Position [N]

Engine power transmitted from the torque converter drives the input shaft idler gear, the idler shaft idler gear, and the driven shaft idler gear, but no hydraulic pressure is supplied to the clutches. Power is not transmitted to the intermediate shaft. In this position, the position of the reverse gear selector lever differs depending on whether the shift lever is moved from [D] or [R]:
  • When shifting from the [D] position, the reverse gear selector lever engages with the 4th gear pinion of the intermediate shaft and the reverse gear selector lever hub, and the 4th gear pinion engages with the intermediate shaft.
  • When shifting from the [R] position, the reverse gear selector lever engages the intermediate shaft reverse gear pinion and the reverse gear selector lever hub, and the reverse gear pinion engages the intermediate shaft.

Note: The picture shows a 4WD automatic transmission; the 2WD gearbox does not have a transfer case.
