Note: Do not turn the camshaft during inspection.
1. Remove the valve rocker arms as an assembly.
2. Place the rocker arm shaft brackets, camshaft and camshaft brackets on the cylinder head and tighten the bolts to the specified torque.

Tightening torque:
- 8mm bolts: 22 Nm (2.2 kgf·m)
- 6mm bolts: 12 Nm (1.2 kgf·m)
- 6mm bolts: 21, 22, 23
3. Place the camshaft in place by sliding it away from the cylinder head camshaft pulley.
4. Set the indicator to zero by resting it against the end of the camshaft, then move the camshaft in the forward and reverse directions and measure the axial clearance. If the axial clearance exceeds the limit, replace the cylinder head and recheck. If it still exceeds the limit, replace the camshaft.

Camshaft axial clearance:
- Standard (new): 0.05-0.20 mm
- Revision: 0.4 mm
5. Loosen the camshaft bracket bolts crosswise, two turns at a time. Then remove the camshaft brackets from the cylinder head.
6. Remove the camshafts from the cylinder head, wipe them clean, then check the cams. Replace the camshaft if the lobes show signs of pitting, scratches, or excessive wear.
7. Clean the bearing surfaces of the camshaft journals in the cylinder head, then put the camshafts back in place. Place lengths of calibrated Plastigage plastic wire on each support journal.
8. Install the camshaft brackets and tighten the bolts to the required torque specified in paragraph. 2.
9. Remove the camshaft brackets. Measure the widest part of the flattened wire on each neck.

- If the gap between the camshaft and brackets is within the normal range, proceed to step. 11.
- If the gap between the camshaft and brackets exceeds the limit value and the camshaft has already been replaced, replace the cylinder head.
- If the gap between the camshaft and the brackets exceeds the limit value and the camshaft has not been changed, proceed to step. 10.
Oil clearance between camshaft and brackets:
| Standard (new): | Neck #1 | 0.030-0.069 mm |
| Necks No. 2, 3, 4, 5: | 0.060-0.099 mm | |
| Limit: | 0.15 mm | |
10. Check the camshaft runout by securing it on prisms.

- If the camshaft runout is within normal limits, replace the cylinder head.
- If the runout exceeds the limit, replace the camshaft and recheck the oil clearance between the camshaft and brackets. If the oil clearance still exceeds the limit, replace the cylinder head.
Camshaft runout:
| Standard (new) | max 0.03 mm |
| Limit | 0.04 mm |
11. Check the height of the cams.
| INLET | RELEASE | |
| PRI | 33.925 mm | 34,092 mm |
| SEC | 29,638 mm |

PRI: Primary
SEC: secondary
C/C: Timing chain
