2. Measure the axle diameter at the location where the first rocker arm is installed.

3. Set the bore gauge (A) to zero on the axle diameter.

4. Measure the inside diameter of the valve rocker arm and check for any signs of ovality.
Clearance between valve rocker arm and axle:
| Standard (new): | Inlet: | 0.025-0.052 mm |
| Issue: | 0.010-0.056 mm | |
| Limit: | 0.08 mm | |

5. Take measurements on all rocker arms and both axles. If the clearance is significant, replace the shaft and any rocker arms that are worn beyond the limit. If any VTEC valve rocker arm needs to be replaced, replace the valve rocker arms (primary and secondary) in assembly.
6. Check the valve rocker arm pistons (A). Press down on each piston with your hand.

If it does not move smoothly, replace the rocker arm assembly.
Note: Apply oil to the pistons during assembly.
