2. Remove the mud deflector.
3. Measure the connecting rod axial play by inserting a feeler gauge between the connecting rod and the crankshaft.
Connecting rod axial play:

4. If the clearance is greater than the permissible limit, install a new connecting rod and recheck. If the play is still significant, replace the crankshaft.
5. Move the crankshaft away from the indicator and set the indicator arrow to zero by resting its head against the end of the crankshaft. Then move the crankshaft towards the indicator; the indicator reading should not exceed the wear limit.
Crankshaft axial clearance:

6. If the axial play is excessive, replace the thrust washers and recheck. If the play is still significant, replace the crankshaft.
