Checking the clearances of connecting rod bearings
1. Remove the oil pump.
2. Remove the mud deflector.
3. Remove the connecting rod cap and bearing shell.
4. Wipe the crankshaft journal and bearing shell with a clean cloth.
5. Place a piece of calibrated Plastigage wire across the crankpins.
6. Reinstall the bearing shell and cover and tighten the bolts to 20 Nm (2.0 kgf·m) + 90°.
Note: Do not rotate the crankshaft during inspection.
7. Remove the bearing cap and shell and measure the widest part of the flattened wire.

Oil clearance between connecting rod bearing and journal:
| Standard (new) | 0.021-0.049 mm |
| Redistribution | 0.060 mm |
8. If the wire is flattened too wide or too narrow, remove the upper bearing shell, install a new bearing assembly with the same color marking and recheck the clearance. Do not adjust clearance by grinding, shimming, or cleaning bearings or caps.
9. If the wire clearance is still incorrect, move up to the next larger or smaller bearing size (with color coding before or after the one you chose) and repeat the gap check again. If the required clearance cannot be achieved by substituting bearings of the next larger or smaller repair size, respectively, replace the crankshaft and start the procedure over.
Selection of connecting rod bearings
Location of connecting rod big end diameter markings
1. Check the connecting rods for cracks and heat damage.
2. Connecting rods have tolerance limits from 0 to 0.024 mm with a step of 0.006 mm depending on the diameter of the large head, which is stamped as a number or a dash (1, 2, 3 or 4/I, II, III or IIII) denoting the limit. Different engines may have all sorts of combinations of numbers and dashes stamped on them. (One half of the numbers or dashes are stamped on the bearing cap, the other half on the connecting rod).

Note: If the markings cannot be read due to dirt or dust accumulation, do not scrape them with a wire brush or scraper. Clean them only with solvent or detergent.
Standard diameter
| Engines K20A4, K20A5 | 48.0 mm |
| K24A1 engines | 51.0 mm |

Location of crankpin markings
3. The marking of the connecting rod journals is stamped on the crankshaft.

4. Select bearings with the required size from the table using the marking of the big end diameter of the connecting rod and the marking of the connecting rod journals.
Note: Color markings are located on the edge of the bearing.
