The camshaft drive belt is changed at 168,000 km or 84 months, whichever comes first. When operating in severe climatic conditions (at air temperature above 32°С or below 29°С) the belt is changed after 96,000 km or after 84 months. The replacement procedure is discussed in Section 3. The period for replacing a belt on a purchased used car with an unknown service history is determined by the map attached at the end of this Chapter in accordance with the mileage and service life ("age"). The engines of the cars in question belong to the so-called category "interference type", i.e. a broken belt is fraught with serious damage due to the collision of the valve heads with the piston bottoms (there are no gaps between pistons and valves, unlike engines of the category "free-running", in which the camshaft can rotate freely when the crankshaft is stationary). On 4-cylinder Odyssey models, a separate toothed belt also drives the balance shaft. The replacement interval for this belt is the same as for the camshaft belt. Check the condition of the belt each time the front covers are removed. When characteristic signs of wear are found (photo), or in case of loss of elasticity of the material, replace the belt.
