Removal

1. Rotate the crankshaft to align the flywheel pointer with Top Dead Center (TDC) on the compression stroke of cylinder #1.

2. Remove the valve cover bolts and the upper camshaft drive belt cover and the covers themselves.

3. Loosen the generator mount and remove the belt.

4. On all vehicles with externally driven water pumps, remove the pump pulley bolts, belt and pulley.

5. Remove the bolt holding the crankshaft pulley. Using a flywheel puller or pulley removal tool, remove the crankshaft pulley.

Be prepared for this bolt to be very tight. Securely support the vehicle before applying force to the bolt.

6. Remove the bolts holding the timing cover and the cover itself.

7. Loosen, but do not remove, the belt adjuster lock bolt. Move the adjuster (against spring tension) to loosen the belt and tighten the adjuster bolt to hold the adjuster in the loosened position.

8. Remove the belt by first sliding it off the top pulley. Inspect the belt carefully for any sign of wear, cracking, loosening or fraying of the teeth (especially on the trailing edge of each tooth) or separation of the teeth from the base. Any liquid contamination, especially oil, on the belt will make it unusable. If the belt has been used for 15,000 km or more, it is recommended to replace it.

9. Inspect the teeth of the pulleys and sprockets, making sure the surfaces are clean and unworn.

To install:

10. Double check the engine position. The pointer on the back of the cylinder block should be aligned with the white mark on the flywheel; the camshaft pulley must be turned so that the small dot or word UP is in the vertical position and the marks on the edges of the pulley are aligned with the surface of the head.

10. Double check the engine position. The pointer…

11. Install the belt on the engine and slide it onto the camshaft pulley.

12. Slowly loosen the adjusting bolt, allowing the adjuster to move away from the belt. Temporarily tighten the adjusting bolt.

13. Install the lower camshaft drive belt cover.

14. Install the crankshaft pulley and key. Tighten the bolt to 115 Nm.

15. Adjust the camshaft drive belt tension. Loosen the adjusting bolt. Rotate the crankshaft counterclockwise until the camshaft pulley turns 3 teeth. Tighten the adjusting bolt to 43 Nm.

15. Adjust the camshaft drive belt tension.…

16. Install the water pump belt and pulley. Tighten the pulley bolts to 12 Nm.

17. Install the drive belts, tension them properly and secure the generator.

18. Install the upper camshaft drive belt cover and valve cover.

19. Run the engine at idle speed. Listen carefully to the engine for any signs of belt beating or hitting the cover.
