Withdrawal
1. Rotate the crankshaft to align the flywheel pointer with TDC (TDC) on the compression stroke of cylinder 1.
2. Remove the bolts of the valve cover and the top cover of the camshaft drive belt and the covers themselves.
3. Loosen the alternator mounting and remove the belt.
4. On all vehicles with externally driven water pumps, remove pump pulley bolts, belt and pulley.
5. Remove the bolt holding the crankshaft pulley. Using a flywheel puller or pulley removal tool, remove the crankshaft pulley.
Be prepared for this bolt to be over tightened. Securely anchor the vehicle before applying force to the bolt.
6. Remove the bolts holding the timing cover and cover itself.
7. Loosen but do not remove the belt adjuster lock bolt. Move the slider (against spring tension) to loosen the belt and fasten the adjusting bolt to hold the adjuster in the loose position.
8. Remove the belt by sliding it off the top pulley first. Inspect the belt carefully for any sign of wear, cracking, looseness, or worn teeth (especially on the trailing edge of each prong) or separating the teeth from the base. Any liquid contamination, especially oil, on the belt makes it impossible to reuse it. If the belt has been used for 15,000 km or more, it is recommended to replace it.
9. Inspect the teeth of the pulleys and sprockets, making sure the surfaces are clean and unfinished.
For installation:
10. Double check the position of the engine. The pointer on the back of the cylinder block must be aligned with the white mark on the flywheel; The camshaft pulley must be rotated so that the small dot or word UP is in a vertical position and the marks on the edges of the pulley are aligned with the surface of the head.
11. Install the belt on the engine and slide it over the camshaft pulley.
12. Slowly loosen the adjuster bolt, allowing the adjuster to move away from the belt. Temporarily tighten the adjusting bolt.
13. Install the camshaft drive belt lower cover.
14. Install the crankshaft pulley and key. Tighten the bolt to 115 Nm.
15. Adjust the tension of the camshaft drive belt. Loosen the adjusting bolt. Rotate the crankshaft counterclockwise until the camshaft pulley has rotated 3 teeth. Tighten the adjusting bolt to 43 Nm.
16. Install the water pump belt and pulley. Tighten the pulley bolts to 12 Nm.
17. Install the drive belts, tighten them properly and secure the generator.
18. Install the upper camshaft belt cover and valve cover.
19. Start the engine at idle. Listen carefully to the engine for any signs of belt rattling or hitting the cover.
