Withdrawal
1. Remove the timing belt, crankshaft gear and idler (see Section Removing, checking the condition and installing the gas distribution belt and timing gears).
Attention! Leave the powertrain mount attached at the timing belt end of the engine.
2. Remove the crankshaft position sensor (TFR).
3. Remove the engine oil pan (see Section Removal and installation of the pallet crankcase of the engine) and an oil pick-up strainer. If equipped, remove the engine oil level sensor.
4. Remove the oil filter head assembly with the VTEC lockout solenoid valve (in front of the oil pump) (see Section VTEC System - General Information and Component Status Check).
5. Turn out fixing bolts and separate a casing of the oil pump from the engine. It may be necessary to insert a lever between the main bearing cap and the pump housing.
Checking the axial play of the gears is carried out using a blade-type probe flatness meter.
Examination
1. Using a large Phillips screwdriver, remove the screws securing the cover to the back of the pump housing.
2. Remove the cover and carefully check the condition of the pump gears. If there are signs of wear or mechanical damage, replace the pump. Measure the working clearances of the pump, compare the measurement results with the requirements of the Specifications.
3. Scrape off all traces of old sealant from the mating surfaces of the pump and engine block (proceed carefully - try not to damage the surfaces of the components made of soft aluminum alloy).
Installation
1. Replace the crankshaft oil seal (see Section Replacing the front crankshaft oil seal).
Note. Before installing the lips of a new oil seal, lubricate with multipurpose grease.
2. Stuff the interior of the pump with petroleum jelly. Install the cover, lubricate the threads of the fixing screws with sealant, screw them in and tighten them diagonally to the required torque.
3. Thoroughly wipe all gasket surfaces with a rag soaked in acetone, completely removing all traces of oil from the bottom.
4. Lightly lubricate the mating surface of the pump housing with an anaerobic sealant, as well as the threaded part of the mounting bolts. Do not overdo it - make sure that the sealant does not block the oil flow and does not get into the blind threaded holes. The components must be assembled within five minutes of applying the sealant, otherwise the procedure will have to be repeated. Don't forget to replace the o-rings.
5. After making sure that the flats of the drive gear of the pump are engaged with the reciprocal flats on the crankshaft trunnion, install the pump in its regular place.
6. Screw in the fixing bolts and tighten them diagonally to the required torque.
7. After replacing the sealing ring, reinstall the oil pickup and tighten its fasteners to the required torque.
8. Install the remaining components in the reverse order of their dismantling.
9. Wait about 20 minutes for the sealant to cure, then refill with fresh engine oil, start the engine and check for leaks. Measure the engine oil pressure.
10. Check the engine oil level.
