Note. The engine should be suspended from above using a winch or A-beam.
2. The oil seal can be replaced without first dismantling the oil pan and the oil seal holder, however, it should be remembered that the new oil seal has fairly hard jaws that can easily be damaged during installation, in addition, the probability of the oil seal turning out when it is seated in the socket is quite high. In Part General and overhaul of the engine This Chapter describes the special precautions to avoid this kind of trouble, however, they all require the preliminary dismantling of the oil pan and holder plate. If you want to take a chance, try to replace the gland in situ - remove the old one from the seat in the holder by prying it with a screwdriver.
3. Lightly coat the trunnion edges and lip of the new oil seal with multipurpose grease, then, using a blunt tool, slide the oil seal onto the shaft. Using a mandrel and a hammer, seat the oil seal in the socket (expansion spring inside). An end head of the appropriate size, or a piece of pipe of a suitable diameter, can be used as a mandrel when fitting the stuffing box (slightly smaller than the outer diameter of the seal).
Note. The gland must be flush with the surface of the holder.
4. Further installation is carried out in the reverse order to the dismantling of the components.
