Examination



1. The crankshaft position sensor (CKP) is used to determine the injection and ignition timing of fuel in each of the engine cylinders. The TDC sensor is used to determine the ignition timing at the moment of engine start. On 4-cylinder engines, the TDC and CKP sensors are mounted under the lower timing belt cover. V6 models are equipped with two TDC sensors mounted behind the front camshaft housing cover and one CKP sensor mounted under the lower timing belt cover. Failure of the CKP/TDC sensor on 4-cylinder models results in the entry of trouble code P0335, P0336, P0361 or P0362 in the self-diagnostic memory of the system. On V6 models, malfunctions in the TDC sensor circuit are characterized by codes P1361, P1362, P1366 or P1367. The CKP sensor failure codes are a combination of P0335 and P0336. 2. Disconnect the sensor wiring connector and connect an ohmmeter to terminals 1 and 2. The required values are given in the Specifications for this Chapter. This test ensures that the TDC sensor is functioning properly. Now connect the ohmmeter to the TDC sensor terminals (terminals 3 and 4). Compare the measurement result with the Specifications.



3. Make sure that there are no breakdowns to ground of each of the terminals: there should be no conductivity.

4. If the results of the described check are negative, replace the TDC sensor.

5. To check the CKP sensor, disconnect its wiring connector and connect an ohmmeter to terminals 1 and 2. Compare the measurement result with the requirements of the Specifications.

6. To check the proper operation of the TDC sensors, disconnect the relevant connector and measure the resistance between terminals 1 and 2 (TDC sensor No.1) and 3 and 4 (sensor No.2). Compare the result with the requirements of the Specifications.

7. Make sure that there is no breakdown of each terminal to ground.

8. If the results of the described checks are negative, replace the faulty sensor.

1. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.

Warning! If the car stereo system is equipped with a security code, make sure you have the correct combination to activate the audio system before disconnecting the battery!
