Replacing piston rings (Honda CR-V 2)

1. Remove the piston from the cylinder block.

3. Thoroughly clean all ring grooves with a broken piston ring or a piston ring groove cleaner with a suitable blade.

The width of the groove for the upper and second compression rings is 1.2 mm. The width of the groove for the oil scraper ring is 2.0 mm (engines K20A4, K24A1) or 2.8 mm (engine K20A5).

File the blade if necessary.

Do not clean ring grooves with a wire brush or deepen the grooves with a cleaning tool.

Note: If it is necessary to separate the piston from the connecting rod, do not install new rings yet.


4. Push the new ring (A) into the cylinder using a piston to a depth of 15-20 mm from the bottom.

5. Measure the gap in the piston ring lock (B) using a feeler gauge:


  • If the gap is too small, make sure these rings are correct for your engine.
  • If the clearance is too large, recheck the cylinder bore against the wear limit specified above.
  • If wear exceeds the permissible limit, the cylinder block must be bored.

Piston ring gap:

Upper compressionStandard (new):0.20-0.35 mm
Limit:0.60 mm
Second compressionStandard (new):0.40-0.55 mm
Limit:0.70 mm
Oil scraperEngine K20A4 (except KY models)
Standard (new):0.25-0.65 mm

6. Install the upper and second compression rings as shown in the figure, the upper ring (A) is marked T or 1R, the second (B) - 2T or 2R. The factory marking should face up.
