Warning! The car models covered in this manual are equipped with an additional security system (SRS). Before doing any work near the airbag unit, steering column or instrument panel, turn off the SRS to avoid injury if it is accidentally deployed (see Section Airbags - general information). SRS circuit wiring is easily identified by the yellow color of the insulation.
This procedure applies to analog type meters only.
Fuel consumption and engine temperature meters
All checks listed below are carried out with the ignition off (key in OFF position).
If the meter needle is constantly in the zero position (empty tank or cold engine), check the condition of the fuse. If the fuse is OK, find the block of the corresponding sensor (see chapter Power and exhaust systems [fuel flow sensor] or Head Cooling, heating systems [temperature sensor]). Use a jumper wire to connect the sensor connector to ground.
Momentarily turn the ignition on by turning the key to the ON position. If the meter flicks, replace the sensor, otherwise use a jumper wire to ground the sensor terminal on the back of the meter. If, when the last terminal is grounded, the meter arrow moves to the maximum position, the problem is a fault in the state of the wiring in the circuit section between the meter and the sensor. If the arrow stays the same (zero) position, check the voltage at the second terminal of the meter when the first one is grounded, - there should be no voltage, otherwise replace the meter.
