Warning! The models of vehicles covered in this manual are equipped with a supplemental restraint system (SRS). Before performing any work near the air bag unit, steering column or instrument panel, turn off the SRS to avoid injury from accidental deployment (see Section Airbags - General Information). The SRS circuit wiring is easily identified by the yellow color of the insulation.
This procedure applies to analog type meters only.
Fuel consumption and engine temperature meters
All the checks listed below are performed with the ignition switched off (key in the OFF position).
If the gauge needle is constantly at zero (empty tank or cold engine), check the fuse. If the fuse is OK, locate the corresponding sensor unit (see Chapter Power and exhaust systems [fuel consumption sensor], or Chapter Cooling and heating systems [temperature sensor]). Using a jumper wire, short the sensor connector to ground.
Momentarily turn the ignition on by turning the key to the ON position. If the meter needle jumps, replace the sensor, otherwise ground the sensor terminal on the back of the meter using a jumper wire. If the meter needle moves to the maximum position when the last terminal is grounded, the problem is a faulty wiring in the circuit section between the meter and the sensor. If the needle remains in the same (zero) position, check the voltage at the second terminal of the meter with the first one grounded - there should be no voltage, otherwise replace the meter.
