Warning! The car models covered in this manual are equipped with an additional security system (SRS). Before doing any work near the airbag unit, steering column or instrument panel, turn off the SRS to avoid injury if it is accidentally deployed (see Section Airbags - general information). SRS circuit wiring is easily identified by the yellow color of the insulation.
Remove the steering column covers and knee brace (see chapter Body).
Examination
1. Disconnect from the battery at first a negative wire, then positive.
Attention! If the stereo system installed in the car is equipped with a security code, before disconnecting the battery, make sure that you have the correct combination to activate the audio system!
2. Remove the lower section of the dashboard from the driver's side of the car (see chapter Body). Moving along the wiring harness from the ignition switch down along the steering column to the left mounting block, disconnect the electrical connector.
3. Check up a socket on existence of conductivity between contact plugs in each of positions of a key of ignition.
4. If there are irregularities in the conductance distribution, replace the switch.
5. Make sure that the lock cylinder is firmly seated in all key positions and that the markings are correctly placed. A worn lock will divide the replacement.
Replacement
Ignition switch
1. Disconnect from the battery at first a negative wire, then positive.
Attention! If the stereo system installed in the car is equipped with a security code, before disconnecting the battery, make sure that you have the correct combination to activate the audio system!
2. Remove the upper and lower sections of the casing of the steering column (see chapter Body).
3. Insert the key into the lock and turn it to the LOCK position (blocking).
4. Turn out two fixing screws and remove assembly of the switch from a steering column.
Lock cylinder
1. Remove the top and covers of the casing of the steering column and the lower section of the instrument panel trim (see chapter Body).
2. Give fixing nuts and lower a column. Disconnect the wiring connectors of the start immobilization assembly if the vehicle is equipped accordingly.
3. The lock assembly is fixed in the column with two shear bolts that need to be drilled out (use a 4.8 mm drill).
4. Release a collar and remove the cylinder of castle assembly from a steering column. With the corresponding vehicle equipment, remove the start immobilization block from the old cylinder. Move the immobilizer to a new cylinder.
Note. When replacing the start immobilizer for any reason, it is necessary to reprogram the control module (RSM) in a service station.
5. Put the replacement cylinder in place (keyless) and securely tighten the new mounting bolts.
6. Insert the key into the cylinder and verify that the assembly is functioning correctly.
7. Tighten the fixing bolts until their heads are sheared off. Connect the electrical wiring to the start immobilization device if the vehicle is equipped accordingly.
8. Further assembly is carried out in the reverse order to the dismantling of the relevant components.
9. Finally, connect the battery (positive wire first, then negative).
