Removal

Engine temperature must be below 38°C. To facilitate installation, ensure that piston No.1 is at Top Dead Center before removing the camshaft.

Engine temperature must be below 38°C. To…

1. Remove the valve cover.

2. Remove the distributor or camshaft position sensor from the end of the camshaft.

3. Loosen the rocker arm assembly retaining bolts in two-turn increments per bolt, working from the center in a crisscross pattern. Remove the rocker arms, axles, and struts as a separate unit. To preserve the assembly as a whole, do not remove the camshaft strut bolts from their holes.

If the unit must be disassembled, carefully study the catalog to establish the position of each part. Each part, especially the rocker arms, must be installed precisely in the original location.

4. Inspect the camshaft by measuring the cams and checking for wear or scoring. Carefully inspect both the journals and the cams.

To install:

5. Wipe the camshaft and mounting surfaces clean of oil and metal filings. Lubricate the camshaft journals and mounting surfaces with a thin layer of aggregate grease.

6. Place the camshaft on the cylinder head with the keyway facing up.

7. Install the new camshaft oil seal with the spring side facing inward, i.e. towards the valves.

8. Lightly lubricate the camshaft lobes with clean machine oil.

8. Lightly lubricate the camshaft lobes with…

9. Loosen the lock nut and remove the adjusting screw for each rocker arm. Check the rocker arm assembly if it has been disassembled. If the camshaft has been replaced, it is recommended that the rocker arms also be replaced.

10. On 1986-91 Accord and 1985-91 Prelude, apply liquid gasket to the cylinder head surfaces mating with the Number 1 and Number 6 camshaft legs.

11. Reinstall the rocker arm assembly and install the bolts finger tight.

12. Use an oil seal drift of the proper diameter and length to install the camshaft oil seal.

13. Tighten the bolts in 2-turn increments in the appropriate order. Be careful that the rocker arms do not pinch the valves. Finally, tighten the bolts evenly and smoothly.

14. Install the camshaft belt pulley if removed. Install the distributor or camshaft position sensor.

15. Adjust the valve clearance. Install the valve cover.
