Withdrawal
The engine temperature must be below 38°C. To facilitate installation, make sure the Number 1 piston is at top dead center before removing the camshaft.
1. Remove valve cover.
2. Remove the distributor or camshaft position sensor from the end of the camshaft.
3. Loosen the rocker set fixing bolts in two turns per bopt, working from the center in a criss-cross pattern. Remove the rocker arms, axles and struts as a separate assembly. To save the assembly as a whole, do not remove the camshaft strut bolts from the holes.
If the assembly is to be disassembled, carefully study the catalog to ascertain the position of each part. Each part, especially the rocker arms, must be precisely installed in its original location.
4. Inspect the camshaft by measuring the cams and checking for wear or scoring. Carefully check both the shaft journals and the cams.
For installation:
5. Wipe the camshaft surfaces and mounting surfaces clean of oil and metal filings. Lubricate the camshaft journals and mounting surfaces with a light coat of general purpose grease.
6. Lay the camshaft on the cylinder head so that the keyway is facing up.
7. Install a new camshaft oil seal with the spring-loaded side inward, i.e. towards the valves.
8. Lightly lubricate the camshaft lobes with clean machine oil.
9. Loosen the lock nut and remove the adjustment screw for each rocker arm. Check the correct assembly of the rocker arm kit, if it was disassembled. If the camshaft has been replaced, it is also recommended to replace the rocker arms.
10. On 1986-91 Accord and 1985-91 Prelude, apply a liquid gasket to the cylinder head surface mating to the Number 1 and Number 6 camshaft struts.
11. Install the rocker arm assembly and install the bolts by finger-tightening.
12. Use an oil seal drift of the proper diameter and length to install the camshaft oil seal.
13. Tighten the bolts in 2-turn increments in the correct order. Be careful that the rocker arms do not pinch the valves. Finally, evenly and smoothly tighten the bolts.
14. Install the camshaft belt pulley, if removed. Install distributor or camshaft position sensor.
15. Adjust the valve clearance. Install the valve cover.
