1988-91 Prelude, 1990-91 Accord
Removal

1. Drain the engine oil. Rotate the crankshaft and align the white notch on the crankshaft pulley with the pointer on the timing belt cover (align the T mark on the flywheel with the pointer on the crankcase on the Prelude).
2. Remove the valve cover and the upper timing belt cover.
3. Remove the power steering pump belt and alternator belt, as well as the air conditioning belt if equipped.
4. Remove the crankshaft pulley and the lower camshaft drive belt cover.
5. Remove the tensioner, timing belt, and driven pulley. Be sure to mark the direction of rotation of the timing belt if you plan to reuse it. On a 1990-91 Accord, also remove the balance belt.
- a. For 1990-91 Accord, remove the balancer pinion housing and balancer driven gear.
- b. Remove the oil pan, oil screen and remove the oil pump mounting bolts. Remove the oil pump assembly.
To install:
7. Install the two dowel pins and new O-ring into the cylinder block.
8. Make sure that the mating surfaces are clean and dry. Apply the sealant evenly to the mating surfaces with a narrow roller.
9. To prevent oil leakage, use suitable thread sealant on the internal threads of the bolt holes.
10. When applying the sealant, wait no more than 20 minutes after installing the parts; it becomes ineffective. After final assembly, wait at least 30 minutes before adding oil to the engine, allowing the sealant time to cure.
11. Install the oil screen and oil pan.
12. Install the balancer drive gear housing and the balancer driven gear, if they were removed.
13. Install the drive pulley, camshaft drive belt, balance belt and tensioners.
14. Install the crankshaft pulley.
15. Install the lower camshaft drive belt cover.
16. Adjust the tension of the camshaft drive belt(s).
17. Install the drive belts for the alternator, power steering and air conditioning compressor; adjust their tension.
18. Install the valve cover and upper timing belt cover.
19. Fill the engine with clean, fresh oil.
1984-87 Prelude, 1984-89 Accord
Removal

1. Remove the camshaft drive belt.
2. On 1984-85 Accord and 1984 Prelude, remove the oil pump drive pulley. Caution: The mounting nut has LEFT-HAND threads. On later models, the pulley is attached to the axle differently and comes off with the front pump cover.
3. Remove the bolts and nuts holding the oil pump. Remove the oil pump.
4. Clean the surfaces where the gaskets will be installed.
If the screen is lifted when removing the oil pump, follow the procedure for removing the oil pan.
5. Remove the bolts securing the pump cover to the pump body and the cover.
6. Inspect the pump for wear and/or damage; replace parts if necessary.
7. Reassemble the pump unit, while the tightening torque of the bolts securing the cover to the pump body is 6.6 Nm.
To install:
8. For installation, use new sealing rings and install the pump. The tightening torque of the mounting nuts and bolts of the oil pump is 12 Nm.
9. Install the oil pump drive pulley if it was removed. Remember that the nut has a left-hand thread, and use thread sealant before installing the nut. Tighten it to 30 Nm.
10. Reinstall the camshaft drive belt and adjust the tension correctly.
11. Start the engine and check for leaks.
