Description

Fuel injectors - solenoid-driven, constant-stroke, pin-type, consist of a solenoid, a needle valve, and a housing. When current is applied to the solenoid coil, the valve lifts and fuel is injected under pressure. Since the height of the needle valve lift and the fuel pressure are constant, the amount of fuel injected depends on the length of time the valve is open (i.e., the duration of current supply to the solenoid coil). The fuel injector is sealed by an O-ring and a sealing ring at the top and bottom. These seals also help to reduce noise.

Examination

Note: Before testing, check the following items: idle speed, ignition timing, and CO concentration at idle speed.

If the engine is running:

1. With the engine running at idle speed, disconnect the connector of each fuel injector one at a time and check for a change in idle speed.
  • If the idle speed drop is almost the same on all cylinders, the fuel injectors are OK.
  • If the idle speed or mixture quality remains the same when any fuel injector is disconnected, replace the fuel injector and retest.

2. Check the clicking sound of each fuel injector with a stethoscope while the engine is running at idle speed.

2. Check the clicking sound of each fuel injector…

If any fuel injector does not make the characteristic clicking sound, replace it and check again to see if the new one clicks.

If there is still no clicking, check the following:
  • Is there a short circuit, open circuit or loose connection in the BLACK/YELLOW wire between the PGM-FI main relay and the connector?.
  • Is there any breakage or rust in the connecting connector?.
  • Is there a short circuit, break or loose connection in the BLACK/YELLOW wire between the connector and the fuel injector?.
  • Is there a short circuit, open circuit, or loose connection in the wire between the fuel injector and the ECM/PCM module?.

If everything is OK, check the ECM/PCM and PGM-FI main relay (see below).
