Precautionary measures
Warning! Do not smoke while working on the fuel system. Do not create sparks or open flames in the workplace.
The fuel line/quick couplers assemblies integrate the fuel pump integrated into the fuel tank with the fuel filter and fuel return pipe and the fuel filter with the fuel supply pipe. To remove or install the fuel filter, fuel pump and fuel tank, you must disconnect or connect quick couplings. Pay attention to the following:
- The fuel pipe/quick couplers assemblies are not heat resistant and will not be damaged by welding or other heat generating operations.
- The fuel pipe/quick coupling assemblies are not acid resistant, do not touch them with wipes that have been used to wipe off the electrolyte. Replace the fuel pipe/quick couplers assemblies if they have been in contact with electrolyte or similar.
- When disconnecting or connecting the fuel pipe/quick coupling assemblies, do not bend or twist them excessively. If there are signs of damage, replace.
Disconnected quick connectors can be reattached, but the retainer on the insertion tube cannot be reused once removed. Change latch:
- when replacing the fuel pump
- when replacing the fuel pipe
- if it was taken off the tube
- if it is damaged
Detachment
Warning! Do not smoke while working on the fuel system. Do not create sparks or open flames in the workplace.
1. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.
2. Remove the filler cap and relieve the fuel pressure in the fuel tank.
3. Relieve fuel pressure (see below).
4. Check quick couplings for dirt and clean if necessary.
5. While holding the coupler in one hand, squeeze the retainer tabs with your other hand and pull the coupler off.
Note:
- Do not damage the tube or other components. Do not use the tool.
- If the coupler does not disengage, wiggle it by squeezing the retainer tabs until the coupler disengages.
- Do not remove the retainer from the tube; if you remove it, you will have to replace it with a new one.
6. Check the contact area of the tube for dirt and damage.
- If the surface is dirty, clean it.
- If the surface is rusty or damaged, replace the fuel pump or fuel feed pipe.
7. Place plastic bags over the disconnected coupler and tube to prevent damage and prevent foreign objects from getting into the disconnected coupler and tube.
Note: The retainer cannot be reused once removed. Change latch:
- when replacing the fuel pump
- when replacing the fuel pipe
- if it was taken off the tube
- if it is damaged
Connection
Warning! Do not smoke while working on the fuel system. Do not create sparks or open flames in the workplace.
1. Check the contact area of the tube for dirt and damage and clean if necessary.
2. Insert a new retainer into the coupler if the retainer is damaged or:
- when replacing the fuel pump
- when replacing the fuel pipe
- if it was taken off the tube
Remove the old retainer from the connecting tube before connecting the new fuel line/quick couplers assemblies.
3. Align the quick couplers with the tube and the latches of the retainer with the grooves of the coupler. Then slide the quick connectors onto the tube until both retainer latches click into place.
Note: If they are difficult to put on, lubricate the end of the tube with fresh engine oil.
4. Check that the coupler is locked and that the latches are engaged; check visually and by pulling on the coupler.
5. Connect the negative cable to the battery and turn the ignition key to the ON position (II). The fuel pump will turn on for approximately two seconds and pressurize the fuel system. Repeat the operation two or three times and check that there are no leaks in the fuel system.
