The operation and maintenance of both types of starters is the same. Both starters are 4-pole, with sequential winding. With the ignition key in the START position, the solenoid armature moves, causing the starter gear to mesh with the flywheel. After the gear is fully engaged with the flywheel, the solenoid armature closes the main contacts of the starter, after which it starts the engine.
When the engine is running, the increased flywheel speed exceeds the natural speed of the starter clutch and gear. The described process continues until the ignition key is turned from the START position to the ON position, in which the starter is turned off and the spring returns the gear to its original position.
