Starter — description and device (Honda Accord 3)

The starter is located on the side of the fireproof wall of the engine compartment. ACCORD and PRELUDE cars are equipped with both direct-drive and reduction starters. They differ in their internal structure, which depends on the starter manufacturer.

Operation and maintenance of both types of starters is the same. Both starters are 4-pin, with sequential winding. When the ignition key is in the START position, the solenoid anchor moves, causing the starter gear to engage with the flywheel. After the gear is fully engaged with the flywheel, the solenoid anchor closes the main contacts of the starter, after which it starts the engine.

When the engine is started, the increased speed of the flywheel exceeds the natural speed of the clutch and the starter pinion. This process continues until the ignition key is turned from the START position to the ON position, in which the starter is turned off and the spring returns the pinion to its original position.
