2. Install the 3/4 synchronizer hub, seal, 5th synchronizer hub and ball bearing onto the input shaft. Make sure that the ball bearing is not installed on the clutch side of the input shaft. Install the entire assembly into the gearbox.
3. Measure the distance between the end of the gearbox and the top of the 1st gear pinion on the input shaft. Measure in three places, calculate the average and record the result.
4. Install the bearing on the input shaft from the clutch housing side (without the spring washer) and temporarily install the clutch housing on the gearbox housing. Measure the distance between the end of the clutch housing and the inner race of the bearing. Measure in three places, calculate the average and record the result.
5. For 1988 model transmissions, use the following formulas to select the correct shims:
- Item 3 + Item 4 - 1.01 = minimum gasket thickness.
- Item 3 + Item 4 - 0.94 = maximum gasket thickness.
Select a gasket or combination of gaskets whose thickness falls within the range between the maximum and minimum calculated using the formulas.
Do not use a set of more than 2 thrust washers.
6. For 1989 model transmissions, use the following formula to select the correct shims:
- Item 3 + Item 4 - 0.93 - gasket thickness.
Select a gasket of equal (or the nearest smaller) thickness calculated using the formula.
7. For 1990-91 transmissions, use the following formula to select the correct gaskets:
- Item 3 + Item 4 - 1.03 = gasket thickness.
Select a gasket of equal (or the nearest smaller) thickness calculated using the formula.
