2. Stop the engine and disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery.
3. Remove the console.
4. On 1984-88 Accord models, move the selector knob to D. On 1988 Prelude models, move the selector knob to R. On 1989 Accord and Prelude models, move the selector knob to N or R. On 1990-91 Accord and Prelude models, move the selector knob to N. Remove the latch from the cable adjuster.
5. Check that the hole in the adjuster is aligned and perfectly matched with the hole in the shift cable.
There are 2 holes at the end of the shift cable. They are located at an angle of 90° to each other and allow the cable to be adjusted in 1/4 turn increments.
6. If the holes do not match, loosen the lock nut on the shift cable and adjust as necessary.
7. Tighten the lock nut and install the latch on the adjuster. If the latch feels like it is sticking when installed, this means the cable is still not adjusted and the procedure should be repeated.
8. Connect the cable to the negative terminal of the battery, start the engine and check the operation of the shift lever in all gears. Then install the console.
