2. Shut off the engine and disconnect a wire from the negative plug of the storage battery.
3. Remove the console.
4. On 1984-88 Accord models. set the selector lever to position D. On 1988 Prelude models, set the selector lever to R. On 1989 Accord and Prelude models, set the selector lever to N or R. On 1990-91 Accord and Prelude models. set the selector lever to N. Remove the latch from the cable adjuster.
5. Check that the hole in the adjuster is exactly aligned and aligned with the hole in the shift cable.
There are 2 holes at the end of the shift cable. They are at 90°to each other and allow adjustment of the cable in 1/4 turn increments.
6. If the holes do not line up, then loosen the locknut on the shift cable and adjust as needed.
7. Tighten the jam nut and place the latch on the regulator. If you feel that the latch sticks during installation, this means that the cable is still not adjusted and the procedure should be repeated.
8. Connect the wire to the negative terminal of the battery, start the engine and check the operation of the shift lever in all gears. Then install the console.
