The torque rod, bolted between the lower control arm and the body or subframe, holds the suspension arm in place against acceleration and braking forces. The rear end of the rod is mounted in bushings, which allow only a small amount of movement in the system. If the bushings are worn or damaged, the front suspension may be forced out of position. Noise, tire wear, and poor handling can result from worn or defective bushings. If the rod is visibly bent (for example, after someone has jacked up the car with the rod resting on it), it should be replaced. The bend shortens the length of the rod and causes the wheel to be set incorrectly.

Removal

1. Raise and securely support the vehicle.

2. Remove the wheel.

3. Loosen the nut at the rear of the torque rod. Remove the nut, washers, bushing, etc.

4. Remove the bolts securing the rod to the suspension arm. Remove the rod.

To install:

5. Carefully inspect the bushings for wear or deformation. Replace them if damaged.

6. Place the rod in place and install the bolts on the suspension arm. Tighten the bolts to 55 Nm.

7. Install the bushings, washers and spacers in the correct order on the rear of the rod. Install a new lock nut. On all models except the 90-91 Accord, tighten the end nut to 44 Nm; on Accord 9091 tighten the nut to 105 Nm.
