Note: To prevent damage to the transfer case housing, always secure it in a soft jaw vise or insert gasket material between the vise and transfer case.
Measuring the clearance in the transfer case gear (hypoid gear)
1. Mount the indicator head on the connecting flange as shown in the figure.
2. Measure the clearance in the transfer case gear.
- Standard: 0.06-0.16mm
Total starting torque measurement
3. Rotate the connecting flange several times to seat the tapered roller bearing.
4. Measure the total starting torque (on the side of the connecting flange) with a torque wrench, as shown in the figure.
- Standard: 2.68-3.47 Nm (27.3-35.4 kgf/cm)
Checking the contact patch in the transfer case gear (hypoid gear)
5. Remove the cover B of the transfer case, then apply a thin layer of red lead evenly on both sides of the teeth of the transfer case gear (top figure in center column).
6. Rotate the connecting flange in both directions until the transfer case gear has rotated one full turn in both directions.
7. Check the contact patch on the gear teeth of the transfer case.
8. If the contact patch shape measurements are abnormal, disassemble the transfer case, replace worn or damaged parts, and reassemble it.
