1. Gently guiding, place the thoroughly wiped and lubricated balance shafts into the engine block. Be careful not to damage the bearing surfaces.
2. Having installed the front balancing shaft and bolted its holder, reinstall the oil pump.
3. Install the front balance shaft gear and, blocking the rear shaft with a bolt or screwdriver (see Section Removing and checking the condition of the balancing shafts (4-cylinder engines)), seat and bolt the rear shaft driven gear.
4. Lubricate the thrust surfaces of the drive and driven gears with clean molybdenum grease. Align the groove on the rear flange of the gear with the pointer on the gear housing, then seat the housing on the block while engaging the gears - the gear may turn slightly clockwise.
5. After the gear housing is installed, check that the mark on the gear wheel is aligned with the pointer on the oil pump cover. If this condition is met, screw in the mounting bolts and tighten them with the required force.
6. Description of the procedure for installing the balancing shaft drive belt is given in the relevant Section of this Chapter.
