The parking brake is a mechanical device that applies braking force to the rear wheels through the rear brakes. A cable connected to the parking brake lever goes to the cable equalizer, which then goes to both rear brakes. When the lever is pulled out, the cable is pulled, dragging both actuating parking brake levers attached to the drum brake pads or rear calipers.
Withdrawal
1. Remove the access cover from the back of the console. In some cases, access may require removal of the console. Loosen the adjusting nut until the ends of the cables can be disengaged from the equalizer. After disconnecting the cables, if desired, you can remove the parking brake lever by unscrewing the mounting bolts securing it to the floor.
2. Raise and secure the vehicle.
3. Remove rear wheels.
4. On vehicles equipped with disc brakes, pull out the locking pin, remove the pin with the head and cotter pin hole, and remove the clip.
5. On vehicles equipped with drum brakes, remove the brake drum and brake shoes. Disconnect the cable from the support shield.
6. Disconnect cables from guides and remove cables from the car.
For installation:
7. Set the cable loosely in place. Start connecting from the rear brake pads (drum brakes) or supports. Make sure the cable is routed correctly and securely fastened.
8. Connect the cable (And) to the lever inside the car.
9. Screw on the bracket mounting bolts. Don't let the cable bend. Make sure the rubber boots are in place where the cables go into the cab.
