Key Interlock Solenoid Test
This area contains components of an additional security system with an airbag (SRS). Review the SRS component locations, precautions, and procedures before attempting any repair or service.
1. Remove the lower instrument panel cover.
2. Disconnect the key lock switch connector from the steering column lock assembly.
3. Move the selector lever to position P.
4. Check up presence of conductivity between contacts of a socket at key introduction and absence of conductivity at key extraction.
5. Make sure the key cannot be removed when pin #2 is powered and pin #1 is ground.
- If the key cannot be removed, the key interlock solenoid is OK.
- If the key can be removed, replace the steering column lock assembly (key interlock solenoid not supplied separately).
Parking Switch Test
1. Remove the front console.
2. Disconnect the parking switch connector.
3. Move the selector lever to position P, then check for continuity between the connector pins. Conductivity should be
4. Move the selector lever from position P, then check for continuity. There should be no conduction.
5. If the parking switch is defective, replace the lock plate.
Note:
- The parking switch is not supplied separately from the lock plate; they form one whole.
- If the parking switch needs to be replaced, see Selector Lever Disassembly below for more details.
Shift Lock Solenoid Test
1. Remove the front console.
2. Disconnect the shift lock solenoid connector.
3. Connect pin #1 to the positive battery terminal and pin #2 to the negative battery terminal.
4. Verify that the selector lever can be moved out of the P position. Disconnect the battery terminals from the shift lock solenoid connector, move the selector lever back to the P position and verify that it locks into it.
Note: Do not apply power to pin #2 (reverse polarity), otherwise you will damage the diode inside the solenoid.
5. Check the gearshift release when the release lever is pressed and the lock when the release lever is released.
6. If the solenoid does not work, replace it.
Shift Lock Solenoid Replacement
1. Remove the front console.
2. Disconnect the shift lock solenoid connector.
3. Remove the two screws from the selector switch side, then remove the shift lock solenoid.
4. Insert plunger and plunger spring into new shift lock solenoid.
5. Apply silicone grease to the tip of the shift lock stop on the stop plate and plunger.
6. Install the shift lock solenoid by aligning the butt of the shift lock solenoid plunger with the tip of the shift lock stop.
7. Install the shift lock solenoid with two screws, then connect the connector.
