Fuel-injected PRELUDE cars from 1988 onwards use water-cooled oil filters to remove some of the heat from the oil flow. The same cooling system appears on ACCORD cars from 1991 onwards. Coolant flows through the oil cooler and transfers heat to the radiator. In most cases, the coolant is cooler than the oil, which helps remove heat. This simple system eliminates the need for an additional oil cooler at the front of the car.

Fuel-injected PRELUDE cars from 1988 onwards use…

Removal

1. After the engine has cooled down, drain the coolant from the radiator into a dry, clean container below the oil filter. Close the container to prevent contamination.

2. Disconnect the hoses leading to the oil filter.

3. Remove the oil filter. Even though the engine is cold and most of the oil is in the oil pan, be prepared for a small amount of oil to leak out and wipe it up immediately.

Be especially careful that the coolant does not get into the oil system, otherwise you will have to change the old oil to new, uncontaminated oil.

4. Remove the oil cooler center bolt, which is located above the oil filter mounting location.

5. Remove the oil cooler and its sealing ring.

To install:

6. Install a new sealing ring onto the oil cooler. Install the cooler with the hose attachment points correctly oriented. Install the center bolt, tightening it to 75 Nm.

7. Install the oil filter.

8. Connect the cooling system hoses using new clamps. Check that the hoses are securely connected and are not kinked or twisted.

9. Fill the cooling system.
