Accord 1984-89, Prelude 1984-87
1. The front and rear main seals are retained on the crankshaft by end caps; they are released and removed with the crankshaft. When reassembling, apply non-hardening grease to the seams where the cover meets the block before installing the seals. The crankshaft and covers should be in place, although the end cover bolts should not be fully tightened until the seals are installed.

2. Apply a light coat of grease to the sealing surfaces of both oil seals. Pack the back of each oil seal with grease to hold the spring in place during installation.

3. Using a drift of the correct diameter and a tool such as Honda tool 07947-SB00200 or similar, install the oil seal from the pulley side. The oil seal should be installed with the part number facing out.

4. Using a drift of the correct diameter and a tool such as Honda 07948-SB00101, install the rear (flywheel side) oil seal. Align the hole in the drift to receive the cotter pin on the crankshaft. Insert the oil seal until the base of the drift rests on the block.

5. Tighten the remaining crankshaft bearing caps to specification.
Accord 1990-91, Prelude 1988-91
The rear oil seal on these engines is located inside a separate housing at the rear of the engine. The seal can be easily removed with the housing or right cover removed. Coat the ends of the seal with a light coat of clean oil. Install the seal using a drift. Install the right cover, tighten the bolts to 12 Nm.
