Note:
- Adjust the timing belt tension on a cold engine.
- The tensioner is spring loaded and tensions the belt automatically after the next adjustment is completed.
- Rotate the crankshaft counterclockwise as viewed from the pulley side. Clockwise rotation may cause the belt tension to be incorrectly adjusted.
- Before adjusting the belt tension, check the timing belt.
1. Disconnect the breather hose, then remove the air cleaner cover.
2. Remove the cylinder head cover.
When installing the cylinder head cover, see p. «Installation».
3. Remove the top cover.
4. Rotate the crankshaft five to six turns to seat the belt.
5. Set the piston of cylinder No. 1 to TDC.
6. Loosen the adjusting bolt 180°.
7. Turn the crankshaft counterclockwise three teeth on the camshaft pulley.
8. Tighten the adjusting bolt.
9. After checking, loosen the crankshaft pulley bolt, then tighten it again with a force of 20 Nm (2.0 kgf/m) and tighten by 90°.
