Warning! The car models covered in this manual are equipped with an additional security system (SRS). Before doing any work near the airbag unit, steering column or instrument panel, turn off the SRS to avoid injury if it is accidentally deployed (see chapter Onboard electrical equipment). SRS circuit wiring is easily identified by the yellow color of the insulation. To avoid damage to the SRS system, make sure that the steering shaft does not turn after removing the steering wheel. Block the column with the ignition key with the front wheels straight ahead.
Withdrawal
1. Disconnect from the battery at first a negative wire, then positive.
Attention! If the stereo system installed in the car is equipped with a security code, before disconnecting the battery, make sure that you have the correct combination to activate the audio system!
2. Remove the access cover from the steering wheel assembly.
3. For the purpose of an immobilization of a pillow of safety disconnect a 2-contact socket of an electroconducting of its module.
4. Remove the airbag module bolt access covers on both sides of the lower part of the steering wheel, remove the TORX head bolts that secure the module to the wheel assembly.
5. Carefully remove the airbag module and move it to a safe location.
Attention! Try not to turn the module so that it faces you. Never place any foreign objects on top of the module.
6. Disconnect the electrical connectors of the horn button and (with appropriate equipment) tempostat.
7. Turn out a bolt of fastening of a steering wheel and mark position of a nave of the last concerning a shaft of a column.
8. Pulling the wheel strictly parallel to its axis, remove it from the steering shaft. If the wheel does not give in, wiggle it a little.
Attention! Never screw the puller bolts into the steering wheel assembly more than five turns, as this may damage the SRS cable drum. For the same reasons, do not allow the column shaft to rotate with the steering wheel removed!
Installation
1. Make sure the front wheels of the vehicle are in a straight line.
2. Make sure that the SRS cable reel is correctly centered - the arrow marked TOP should point straight up. If the column shaft did not rotate after removing the steering wheel, there should be no problems with this issue. If for any reason the shaft did turn, re-align by proceeding as follows:
- a) Turn the cable drum clockwise as far as it will go;
- b) Rotate the cable drum counterclockwise about two and a half turns so that the mark is pointing straight up.
3. Move the steering wheel to its normal position and achieve alignment of the landing marks applied during dismantling. Make sure that the column guide pins fit into the mating holes on the back of the steering wheel and that the hub is correctly engaged with the turn signal switch return device. Place the wheel hub on the steering shaft pin, screw in the fixing bolt and tighten it to the required force.
4. Connect the horn connectors and (with appropriate equipment) tempostat.
5. Replace the SRS module with new TORX bolts. Make sure the bolts are tightened to the correct torque. Replace the screw access covers.
6. Connect the connector halves of the SRS cable drum together.
7. Install the access cover on the steering wheel assembly.
