1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Raise and support the vehicle securely with stands. Remove the transmission from the vehicle. Mark the relative positions of the flywheel and clutch for subsequent assembly.

2. Hold the flywheel ring gear with a special tool, loosen the fixing bolts and remove the pressure plate and clutch disc. Loosen the bolts 2 turns at a time in a cross pattern to prevent deformation of the pressure plate.

3. At this point, inspect the flywheel for wear, cracks, and metal galling. Replace the flywheel if necessary. Resurfacing the flywheel is not recommended.

4. If the release bearing needs to be replaced, the following steps should be performed on all models except the 1990-91 Prelude and Accord:
  • a. Remove the 8mm bolt.
  • b. Remove the fork arm and release bearing assembly.
  • c. Separate the clutch fork from the bearing by removing the fork spring through the holes in the bearing.

5. To remove the release bearing on 1990-91 Prelude and Accord models, follow these steps:
  • a. Remove the boot from the clutch housing.
  • b. Remove the clutch fork from the clutch housing by compressing the fork mounting spring.
  • c. Remove the release bearing from the fork.

6. Inspect the release bearing for excessive play by rotating it by hand. If there is excessive play, the bearing should be replaced. The bearing is filled with grease, so do not wash it with cleaning agents.

To install:

7. If the flywheel has been removed, clean the mating surfaces of the crankshaft and flywheel. Align the flywheel bore with the crankshaft key and finger-tighten the flywheel bolts. Install the ring gear holder and tighten the flywheel bolts. Tighten the bolts in a crisscross pattern to 105 Nm (Prelude and Accord).

8. Install the clutch disc and pressure plate, aligning the dowel pins on the flywheel with their holes on the pressure plate. If the pressure plate is not replaced after disassembly, align the marks made before disassembly. Finger tighten the pressure plate bolts.

9. Insert the clutch disc alignment tool into the splined hole of the clutch disc. Tighten the pressure plate bolts 2 turns at a time in a crisscross pattern to prevent the disc from warping. The final tightening torque should be 26 Nm.

10. Remove the alignment tool and ring gear holder.

11. If the release bearing has been removed, installation should be done in the reverse order. Before installation, coat the inner surface of the bearing with a thin layer of molybdenum disulfide grease.

12. Install the gearbox. Before tightening the gearbox bolts, carefully align the splines of the clutch disc with the gearbox input shaft and the gearbox with the cylinder block.

13. Adjust the clutch pedal free play and connect the cable to the negative terminal of the battery.
