Examination
Check with the following in mind:
- If the belt has cracks or other obvious damage, replace the belt with a new one.
- When working with a dynamometer, follow the manufacturer's instructions.
1. Attach a dynamometer to the belt and measure the belt tension.
2. Carefully unhook the dynamometer from the belt so as not to move the reset lever. Tension:
- Used belt: 340-490 N (35-50 kgf/m)
- New belt: 640-785 N (65-80 kgf/m)
Measurement without dynamometer
Press the belt between the pulleys of the power steering pump drive belt and the crankshaft with a force of 98 N (10 kgf/m) and measure deflection. Deflection:
- Used belt: 10.5-14.0mm
- New belt: 7.5-10.0mm
Adjustment
1. Loosen the mounting bolt and the power steering pump retaining bolt.
2. Adjust the belt tension by moving the power steering pump with a 1/2" pry bar and achieve the desired belt tension, then tighten the mounting bolt and stop bolt.
3. Start the engine and turn the steering wheel from lock to lock a few times, then stop the engine and recheck the belt deflection.
