All Accord and Prelude models covered in this book use an electric fuel pump located near or inside the fuel tank. The 1985 Accord and 1987 Prelude use an external fuel pump mounted under the vehicle in front of the left rear wheel. All others (later) vehicles use an electric fuel pump installed inside the fuel tank. Please note that on some vehicles, the fuel tank does not need to be removed to replace the pump located inside.
When the ignition key is turned to position "ON" without starting the engine, you should hear the pump running. This action is necessary to create pressure inside the lines.
When the engine of a car with an external fuel pump cranks without starting, and the pump cannot be heard, first check the appropriate fuses. An emergency measure that sometimes works is to hit the pump housing with a wooden mallet handle two or three times; sometimes the pump can be brought back to life. This is one of several cases where a small amount "violence" can let you get home.
Fuel tank pumps are smaller, more efficient and quieter; but inaccessible in a hurry. Fortunately, they are well protected from road hazards and rarely fail.
