If the rear brakes have been repaired or replaced, start the engine and depress the brake pedal several times to test the brakes before adjusting the parking brake cable. Improperly adjusted rear brakes (disc or drum) will affect the operation of the parking brake mechanism.
1. Raise and secure the vehicle.
2. On vehicles equipped with rear disc brakes, make sure the rear brake caliper lever engages the caliper pin.
3. On vehicles equipped with rear drum brakes, make sure the rear brakes are properly adjusted.
4. Pull out the parking brake lever one click.
5. Remove the rear console access cover or rear seat ashtray. On a 1990-91 Accord. remove the center console to gain access to the adjusting nut. Tighten the adjusting nut until the rear wheels slow down a little when turning.
6. Release the parking brake lever and check that the rear wheels do not brake when turning.
7. With a properly adjusted equalizer, the parking brake should be fully applied when the parking brake lever is pulled 7-11 clicks out on a 1984-89 Accord. and Prelude 1984-91 or 4-8 clicks on a 1990-91 Accord.
