Valve stroke
Measure the clearance between the valve stem and the valve guide using a dial indicator by rocking the valve in the guide.
- If the measurement exceeds the permissible limit, repeat the measurement using a new valve.
- If the measurement is now within tolerance, reassemble with the new valve.
- If the measurement still exceeds the limit, repeat the measurement using the other method below, then replace the valve and guide bushing if necessary.
Clearance between the stem and the guide sleeve of the intake valve:
- Standard (new): 0.04-0.10 mm
- Limit: 0.16 mm
Clearance between stem and guide bushing of exhaust valve:
- Standard (new): 0.10-0.16 mm
- Limit: 0.22 mm
Note: An alternative method of checking stem-to-guide clearance is to subtract the valve stem outside diameter, measured with a micrometer, from the guide inside diameter, measured with a bore gauge or ball plug gauge. Take measurements at three locations along the valve stem and at three locations inside the guide. The difference between the largest guide measurement and the smallest stem measurement should not exceed the wear limit.
Clearance between the stem and the guide sleeve of the intake valve:
- Standard (new): 0.02-0.05 mm
- Limit: 0.08 mm
Clearance between stem and guide bushing of exhaust valve:
- Standard (new): 0.05-0.08 mm
- Limit: 0.11 mm
