Warning! See warnings at the beginning of the Section Relieving pressure in the fuel system.

Removing the fuel line from a 4-cylinder engine can be done without first removing the air plenum chamber. On V6 engines, the plenum chamber must be removed to provide access to the left and right bank fuel lines, and both lines can be removed as a single assembly with the injectors attached to them.

Removal

1. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.

Warning! If the car stereo system is equipped with a security code, make sure you have the correct combination to activate the system before disconnecting the battery!

2. Release the pressure in the fuel system (see Section Relieving pressure in the fuel system).

3. On V6 models, remove the access covers from the top of the powertrain (see Chapter Engine).

4. On V6 models, remove the air plenum chamber (see Chapter Engine).

6. Disconnect the fuel return hose from the pressure regulator.

Note: The fuel return line is thinner and is secured to the regulator fitting with a small spring type clamp, then the fuel supply hose (pressure line) is bolted to the line.

7. Disconnect the ground busbars from the fuel line.

9. Remove the mounting nuts/bolts and remove the engine fuel line.

Note: On V6 models, both cylinder banks must lift at the same time.

11. Remove and discard old seals and damper rings/washers.

Note: It makes sense to replace all rings/washers used in the injectors, regardless of their condition.

Installation

1. Lubricate new damper washers with clean engine oil and place them on the injection injectors.

2. Install new sealing rings (also lubricated with engine oil), then insert the injectors into their mounting seats in the fuel line.

3. Lubricate the new sealing rings with engine oil and insert them into the injector mounting holes in the intake manifold.

4. Install the fuel rail assembly with injectors to the intake manifold. Tighten the mounting nuts (4-cylinder models) to the specified torque. On V6 models, tighten the mounting bolts securely.

5. Further installation is carried out in the reverse order of dismantling the components.

6. After completing the installation, without starting the engine, turn on the ignition to activate the fuel pump for a couple of seconds and increase the pressure in the fuel system. Repeat this switching on two or three times, then check the fuel lines, main line and injectors for signs of leaks.
