The air cleaner, located on top of or near the carburetor or throttle valve, should be replaced every 50,000 km or every 24 months, whichever comes first. This is the maximum interval; the filter should be checked periodically and replaced if dirty or clogged. The air cleaner itself is one of the cheapest components of the engine. Never operate the engine with the filter or filter mounting cover removed.

1. To remove, loosen the wing nuts, bolts and/or spring clamps on the air cleaner cover; on some models, you may also need to remove the standard nut. Some Prelude models use a can filter that bolts the cover onto.



2. Remove the cleaner cover and the air cleaner element. On a 1990-1991 Prelude, also remove the small leak filter located on the top of the housing. The Accord (1984-86) uses a similar filter on the air cleaner side.

4. Install a new air cleaner and, if necessary, a new particulate filter, which can be reused if it was simply clogged with dust or oil. Make sure the filter element is properly seated in place; fit the cover to the filter, which will seal the housing and direct all air flow strictly through the filter.

Generally, air cleaner elements are not interchangeable, although they may be. Make sure you purchase the correct element for your model.


5. Most round cases have hands etched into the metal; align these arrows before attempting to install the cover. Proper alignment will make it easier to seat the cover in place.
