The mechanism locks the gearbox by engaging the parking brake pawl with the parking gear, which is made integral with the secondary shaft pinion gear. The secondary shaft pinion gear engages with the secondary shaft driven gear, which in turn engages with the final drive driven gear.

When shifting to the P position, the parking cone (installed at the end of the parking rod) presses the parking brake pawl against the parking gear. Even if the end of the parking brake pawl slides on the tops of the parking gear teeth, with a slight movement of the vehicle, the parking brake pawl and the parking gear will fully engage with each other, because the parking rod spring presses on the brake cone. The pawl spring (which tends to separate the parking brake pawl from the parking gear) presses on the parking brake pawl.
