ABS warning light

1. If the system is OK, the ABS indicator lamp goes out approx. 2 seconds after the ignition key is turned to the ON (II) position. During this time, the system is checked. If the engine is then started, the indicator lamp comes on again and goes out approx. 2 seconds after the ignition key is returned to the ON (II) position. This is because the power supply to the ABS control unit is switched on by a circuit that is only connected when the ignition key is in the ON (II) position.

2. If a malfunction occurs in the system, the control unit determines the location and nature of the malfunction and stores a diagnostic trouble code (DTC). At the same time, the ABS warning lamp lights up. If the DTC is not stored, the warning lamp does not light up except for the initial period.

3. If a short-term or long-term fault occurs in the system, the behavior of the indicator lamp depends on the nature of the fault and is divided into the following 3 types.

DTC codes 61 or 62

If a malfunction is detected before driving, the indicator lamp lights up and goes out after returning to normal.

DTCs 11, 13, 15, 17,31-38, 54, 71, 81

If a malfunction is detected before driving, the indicator lamp lights up and, regardless of whether the malfunction has been corrected or not, continues to light until the ignition key is turned to the OFF position.

DTCs 12, 14, 16, 18, 21-24, 41-44, 51, 53

If a malfunction is detected, the indicator lamp lights up and remains lit until the ignition key is turned to the OFF position. The next time the indicator lamp goes out while driving, it will only go out after the malfunction has been corrected.

4. Even if the system is normal, the indicator lamp may illuminate and indicate a malfunction in the following cases. If the system is found to be normal, clear the DTCs.
  • Only the drive wheels rotate
  • Wheel slippage
  • Turning the car
  • ABS system operation for a long time
  • Extraneous signals (noise)

5. If the ABS warning light and the brake system warning light come on at the same time, first determine the cause of the ABS warning light coming on.
