Description
The three-way catalytic converter (TWC) is used to convert hydrocarbons (HC), carbon monoxide (CO) and nitrogen oxides (Nox) contained in the exhaust gases into carbon dioxide (CO₂), nitrogen (N₂) and water vapor.

Examination
If you suspect excessive exhaust backpressure, remove the TWC from the vehicle and use a flashlight to visually inspect the catalytic converter for plugged, melted, or cracked areas. If there are visible areas of damage or plugging, replace the TWC.
