Note: When installing a new belt, first adjust the deflection or tension to the values for the new belt, then adjust the deflection or tension to the values for the used belt by starting the engine and letting it run for 5 minutes.
Deflection:
- Used belt: 8.0-10.5mm
- New belt: 6.0-8.5mm
Note: If the belt is worn or damaged, replace it.
Deflection measurement method
Apply force 98 Nm (10 kgf) and measure the deflection between the alternator pulleys and the crankshaft.
Method for measuring belt tension with a dynamometer
Hook the dynamometer to the belt and measure the tension. Follow the dynamometer manufacturer's instructions.
Tension:
- Used belt: 340-490 N (35-50 kgf)
- New belt: 540-740 N (55-75 kgf)
Note: If the belt is worn or damaged, replace it.
If adjustment is required:
1. Loosen the mounting nut and locknut.
2. Move the generator and adjust the belt tension to the required value, then tighten the nuts.
3. Recheck belt deflection or tension.
Note: To adjust the drive belts for the power steering pump and the air conditioning compressor, refer to the relevant chapters.
